Matrix is undergoing a rebranding process for its India and China affiliates, aligning with other venture firms in distancing its international branches.
The venture capital firm, headquartered in the U.S., will maintain its name, while Matrix Partners India will be known as Z47 and Matrix Partners China as MPC. These affiliates were established in 2006 and 2008, respectively.
The rebranding will be effective starting July 1. Significantly, Matrix’s announcement described its India and China operations as “entities operating under the Matrix name” rather than standalone units.
Matrix Partners India assured that the rebranding will not impact its operations, funds, or strategy. The new name, Z47, symbolizes India’s journey towards achieving developed country status by 2047.
The renaming and organizational update are intended to clarify each team’s localized approach and organizational independence since their inception, according to Matrix Partners.
The firm emphasized that each team has maintained separate decision-making and back-office operations from the beginning.
This rebranding effort comes in the wake of Sequoia’s division of its India and Southeast Asia branches from its China unit last year amid geopolitical tensions between China and the U.S.
Matrix stated, “The decision to rebrand reflects a joint commitment to clarity in the market, responsiveness to regional market dynamics, and a continued focus on local competition, all of which will benefit the respective portfolio companies, investors, and partners of each organization.”
