The European Commission’s executive VP has criticized Apple for not launching new Apple Intelligence features on iPhones in the European Union, calling it a move that hampers competition. Margrethe Vestager made these remarks at Forum Europa in response to Apple’s decision to delay its AI rollout in the EU, as reported by The Verge.
Last week, Bloomberg reported that Apple would not release Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring, and SharePlay Screen Sharing in the EU this year, citing concerns over the Digital Markets Act and interoperability requirements.
The DMA aims to promote competition by opening up large tech companies’ platforms. Apple’s reluctance to launch AI features in the EU is seen as an attempt to avoid complying with these competition regulations.
Vestager emphasized that Apple’s decision reflected a desire to maintain dominance rather than fostering competition. She stated, “I find it very interesting that they are withholding AI features in regions where they are not obligated to enable competition, indicating an effort to stifle competition where they already hold a strong position.”
Recently, the EC raised concerns about Apple’s App Store policies not aligning with DMA rules, potentially leading to significant fines. Additionally, a new investigation has been initiated into the company’s business terms for publishers in the EU.
