Google is expanding its reach beyond the Play Store by introducing a new feature called “Collections” that allows users to access their Android apps directly from their home screen. At the recent Google I/O developer conference, the company unveiled tools for developers to engage with users and showcase their apps. Initially, details were scarce about how this feature would be implemented, with the focus mainly on the software development kit (SDK) for developers to integrate.
Google announced partnerships with over 35 developers, including big names like Spotify, Pinterest, and TikTok, to test the new feature.
During a conference session, developers learned about the new Engage SDK, aimed at re-engaging users through content, promotions, and deals. Google mentioned that the surface would organize content from installed apps automatically, facilitating cross-app journeys across different categories.
Recent findings from an APK teardown of the Google Play Store by Android Authority unveiled a feature known as “Collections.” This Play Store-powered widget will categorize app updates under sections like Watch, Listen, Games, and more.
Users can access relevant content from their apps by selecting a specific category, assuming the apps are integrated with the SDK. Google aims to offer users personalized recommendations and promotions to enhance their app experience.
The feature will launch initially in the U.S. before expanding to other markets. Users can access Collections through a shortcut within the Play Store app by long-pressing on it. Google is expected to officially announce this feature at the upcoming “Made by Google” event in August.
