The Amazon Fire Max 11 was one of my favorite Android tablets released recently. It is affordable, portable, and offers a good selection of accessories. However, with the addition of Google Play, it becomes even more versatile.
After some time, I revisited the Fire Max 11 to see if it still holds up well a year after its initial release.
Initial Observation
Upon using the Fire Max 11 again, I immediately noticed that the screen’s 60Hz refresh rate gives it an outdated feel compared to the higher refresh rates found on most Android smartphones today. This difference becomes apparent when using browsers like Chrome or Silk, where scrolling causes text to blur. While users accustomed to 60Hz may not notice, those experienced with higher rates will find it hard to adjust.
In mid-2024, higher refresh rates are expected, making the Fire Max 11’s 60Hz screen a drawback. Additionally, the outdated three-button Android control system adds to its old-fashioned feel. However, recent software updates have introduced Android gesture controls, addressing one of the tablet’s major shortcomings.
Evaluation of the Keyboard
Setting aside screen and software concerns, the keyboard attachment greatly enhances the Fire Max 11’s functionality, transforming it into a viable work tablet. The typing experience is satisfying, with well-spaced keys offering good tactile feedback. However, lap use may be challenging due to the slightly wobbly design.
Typing on a flat surface provides a more stable experience, with strong Wi-Fi connectivity and sufficient processing power for daily tasks. While lap use may be inconvenient, the Fire Max 11 excels as a work companion when used at a desk.
Key Considerations
Despite its 60Hz screen and keyboard limitations, the Fire Max 11 remains a compelling choice, priced at $330 (with Amazon ads) for the tablet, keyboard, and stylus bundle. It caters well to entertainment, basic productivity, and gaming needs, but it requires the installation of Google Play for optimal functionality.
While Amazon’s Android version and app store may not be as refined, adding Google Play significantly enhances the Fire Max 11’s usability. Without this addition, the tablet’s value diminishes, especially for work-related tasks. Nevertheless, it remains a budget-friendly, versatile option for general tablet usage.
