Character.AI, backed by a16z, has introduced a new feature that allows users to engage in conversations with AI characters over calls. This feature supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.
Prior to the public launch of this calling feature, the startup conducted testing which revealed that over 3 million users had already made more than 20 million calls. The company highlights the usefulness of these calls for practicing language skills, conducting mock interviews, or incorporating them into role-playing games.
Users can easily begin calls with user-generated AI characters with just a tap of a button. Character.AI has designed this feature to ensure a smooth calling experience with minimal latency.
The platform allows for seamless switching between calling and texting, and users can also interrupt the AI character by tapping on the screen.
In March, Character.AI rolled out Character Voices, enabling users to hear the characters speak in one-on-one chats. With the ability to create custom voices, the app boasts a library of over 1 million voices.
As some Reddit users have voiced concerns about changes in their characters’ personalities, Character.AI clarified that no major alterations were made. The startup explained that some users may have been part of a test group, leading to perceived behavioral differences in the characters.
Recent reports from The Information suggest that Google is developing its own chatbot platform to compete with Meta and Character.AI.
