Steam, the popular game launcher and storefront run by Valve, is now testing a new feature that allows players to record gameplay clips directly from the Steam app.
The announcement of the “Game Recording Beta” was made in a Steamworks Development Events blog post and a dedicated web page. With Steam Game Recording, players can capture footage of their gameplay in the background while using Steam, offering various benefits. Through the Steam Overlay, players can replay captured gameplay clips and easily locate key moments of their gameplay using event markers on the Steam Timeline.
Furthermore, tools are available for clipping and basic editing of gameplay footage, and the Recordings & Screenshots interface on Steam has been redesigned to simplify editing and sharing processes. Users can share gameplay videos with friends, export them, or save them directly from Steam via a Save/Share menu. Valve aims to make Game Recording compatible with Steam Deck and streamline the process of transferring these videos to the Steam apps on PC and mobile.
Concerned about performance impact, Valve assures that Steam Game Recording has been designed to consume minimal resources from the computer, especially for users with Nvidia or AMD graphics cards. Players can opt into the Steam Client Beta group to try out game recording, while game developers can enhance Game Recording support for their games through Steamworks.
