As browsers continue to integrate AI features into their products, Mozilla is aiming to provide users with options. On Tuesday, the company announced the launch of an opt-in experiment in Nightly, the experimental version of Firefox, allowing users to access various AI services.
Mozilla plans to enhance this experience before rolling it out to the beta and release versions of Firefox.
Users who choose to participate in the experiment will have the opportunity to select their preferred AI service. Initially, Mozilla is offering ChatGPT, Google Gemini, HuggingChat, and Le Chat Mistral with plans to introduce more AI services in the future.
In a blog post, Firefox senior vice president Ian Carmichael emphasized the importance of offering choice in AI services. He stated, “Providing choice in AI services is important for many reasons. First, you should be able to choose the service that works best for you, and not be locked into a single provider. Second, all of these models are still being developed and improved. None are perfect, and each has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. Offering options gives people an opportunity to experiment with many services to find the one that’s most helpful in solving the problem they have.”
Once users have selected their preferred AI service, they can utilize the chatbot to summarize information on a webpage, simplify language, or test their knowledge on the information presented.
The objective of this new offering is to enable users to try out different chatbots and select their favorite. It is important to note that this offering is optional, and users are not required to choose an AI service at all.
The launch of this new experience coincides with other companies like Google and Microsoft integrating AI chatbots into their browsers. Browser startups such as Opera and DuckDuckGo have also introduced AI chatbots that assist users in tasks like summarizing webpages and answering questions.
