TikTok is exploring a way to bypass the App Store and save on commissions. Users are being presented with a link to a website for purchasing digital creators’ coins, used for tipping. Typically, these coins are bought through in-app purchases, which require a 30% commission to Apple.
It appears that this feature is not visible to all users, possibly being shown to specific groups like testers or high spenders. Users with access to this option are prompted to “recharge” by purchasing more coins through tiktok.com. Although the screenshots were found within the iOS app by TechCrunch tipster David Tesler, it’s unclear how widespread this is among TikTok users.
According to Tesler, the ability to purchase coins via the web was displayed to an account that had previously bought a significant amount of coins.
Users are sometimes shown a screen with a message encouraging them to recharge on tiktok.com to avoid in-app service fees, followed by a link to “Try now.” Other times, a pop-up suggests trying recharging on tiktok.com to save on service fees and provides a “Try now” button or a “Don’t show again” option.
Users who follow the provided link are directed to a website to buy coins: tiktok.com/coin. Payments can be made using various methods like Apple Pay, debit, or credit cards. The website mentions that buying directly from TikTok can save around 25% on third-party fees.
