This month on PocketGamer.biz, we have been shining a spotlight on the MENA region. We have explored the region’s growing potential, conducted interviews with studios within the area, and are excited to announce the upcoming Dubai GameExpo Summit powered by PG Connects starting tomorrow!
As we delve deeper into the opportunities present in the MENA region, we reached out to our Mobile Mavens to gather their insights on the future of gaming in MENA and offer valuable advice for those looking to enter this unique market.
Reflecting on my visit to GameExpo Dubai last year, I witnessed the exciting growth potential of the gaming market in the MENA region. Data.ai’s projections indicate a 10% annual expansion until 2030, with Saudi Arabia contributing nearly 60% of the revenue, as per Sandsoft data.
The MENA region boasts a substantial base of dedicated gamers who actively engage with popular titles on PC and consoles, particularly enjoying games like Clash of Clans and sandbox games such as Roblox and Minecraft.
To tap into this thriving market, adapting global games for local audiences could prove more successful than creating region-specific titles. This approach combines the popularity of internationally acclaimed games with localized elements that resonate with the audience. Furthermore, social and multiplayer games hold significant potential as they provide a culturally accepted platform for social interaction.
To maximize performance in the region, prioritize culturally sensitive localization over mere translation
Peter Fodor
To enhance performance in the MENA region, focus on localization that respects local culture and norms, going beyond mere translation. In the creative space, advertisements should reflect local environments, ethnic groups, and other regional elements. From a genre perspective, tycoon crafting, idle games, card games, poker, social casinos, esports, and customizable in-game features are popular choices.
Collaborating with local influencers like Saudi Gamer YouTubers can help reach a wider audience effectively. Additionally, catering to the sizable female gamer demographic in the region by creating content that appeals to their interests can broaden your reach.
Efforts are underway to support the gaming ecosystems in Saudi Arabia and the UAE through government backing, tax incentives, and training programs, though it may take some time before the full impact is realized in terms of successful regional game developments. Currently, the region boasts around ten major studios, fewer than initially anticipated when exploring the MENA market.
Competition for targeting Middle Eastern gamers, especially on the User Acquisition front, is not as intense, and the purchasing power varies significantly across different countries and income brackets. To navigate the region’s cultural nuances effectively, partnering with local entities or establishing a local team is advisable.
At our company, we have been actively engaged in the MENA region for four years and foresee continued growth and opportunities. There is immense potential to cater to the expanding gamer community, establish local studios and gaming businesses with governmental support, and tailor content to resonate with Arabic and regional cultures.
Understanding the user base and audience is crucial for maximizing performance. Strategic planning, backed by accurate market research data and insights, is essential for success in this dynamic market.
The MENA audience is predominantly young, with over 60% of the population under 30 years old. This presents an opportunity to deliver high-quality gaming experiences tailored to the interests of the youthful gaming community in the region. Developers must respect local customs and nuances while ensuring localized content resonates with each nation’s culture. Market data from Data.AI’s State of Mobile 2024 report indicates a shared interest in gaming genres like hypercasual, simulation, and action games between Saudi Arabian audiences and global gamers, emphasizing the importance of engaging and relatable gaming experiences for all audiences worldwide.
As a mobile game developer focused on Africa, we are dedicated to creating authentic and innovative gaming experiences tailored to African and global audiences. We believe that Africa is poised to become the next billion-dollar gaming market, with similarities in payment methods, distribution channels, user behaviors, and communities across various markets.
For game developers eyeing the region, understanding the diverse African landscape and forming local partnerships are key
Claire Rozain
Given the current limitations in smart algorithms for scaling games in the region, there is an opportunity for smaller, local developers to gain a competitive edge by leveraging community knowledge and regional insights. To penetrate the African gaming market successfully, understanding the unique African landscape and establishing partnerships focused on organic growth are essential.
An organic approach to game development can have a significant impact on reaching the regional audience effectively and reducing user acquisition costs, bypassing dependency on algorithms. Collaborations with distribution partners like Gara Store are pivotal for driving growth and profitability in the MENA region, particularly in North Africa, to establish trust and reach a vast audience.
