According to a recent newsletter from prominent Apple tipster Mark Gurman, the upcoming iPad Pro set to be revealed on May 7 may feature Apple’s new M4 chip, surprising many who were expecting an upgrade to the current M3 chip.
If Gurman’s information is correct, the new iPad Pro would be the first Apple device to incorporate the more powerful M4 chip, outpacing the company’s upcoming laptops and desktops which are also expected to debut with the latest Apple silicon later this year.
Gurman speculated that Apple may market the new tablet as its first truly AI-powered device, tapping into the AI trend that has swept the tech industry in recent years. By introducing the M4 chip in the iPad Pro ahead of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple can showcase its AI chip strategy without distraction and highlight how the new device will leverage AI software and services in iPadOS 18.
If Apple indeed chooses to launch the iPad Pro with the M4 chip instead of the M3, it would be a move consistent with its decision to skip the M2 chip in the past. The upcoming iPad Pro is also rumored to feature its first OLED display, while the iPad Air is expected to include a 12.9-inch display for the first time. Additionally, a new Magic Keyboard and an updated Apple Pencil with haptic feedback are also rumored alongside the refreshed devices.
