Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update is set to introduce a new hardware requirement. The update, with build 26080, will now only boot on CPUs that support SSE4.2, an essential component for modern processors.
The information was shared by Bob Pony on X (formerly known as Twitter), following previous reports in February about CPUs without POPCNT instruction support no longer being compatible. The updated requirement now extends to the entire SSE 4.2 instruction set instead of just the POPCNT instruction within it.
⚠️ UPDATE: Since Windows 11 Build 26080, a CPU with the SSE4.2 instruction is ALSO REQUIRED TO BOOT Windows 11 Version 24H2!!
Systems without SSE4.2 instruction will trigger an automatic reboot when attempting to boot Build 26080+ at the boot screen phase. https://t.co/iLkYuqQojZ pic.twitter.com/5RCxzoFexQ

These updates exceed the initial criteria for installing or updating to Windows 11, introducing new requirements such as Secure Boot, TPM support, and a Kaby Lake or newer CPU. The POPCNT and SSE 4.2 requirements will be exclusive to 24H2 and are expected to continue in subsequent Windows 11 iterations.
While aimed at enhancing performance and compatibility with newer hardware, Microsoft has made it more challenging for users looking to run the latest Windows 11 version.
It’s worth noting that the hardware compatibility list for Windows 11 excludes older CPUs, so users with compatible hardware should not be affected by the new requirements. However, those with older hardware may face challenges navigating the stricter criteria.
Windows 11 24H2, expected to launch later this fall, will likely focus on AI. With companies like Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm introducing new chips with integrated Neural Processing Units (NPU), Copilot in Windows 11 24H2 is set to bring significant improvements. Additional features like “Super Resolution,” utilizing AI to enhance game graphics, voice clarity support, an updated energy-saver mode, and design changes are also anticipated.
