If you’ve been following indie publisher Annapurna Interactive over the last two years, you might be familiar with Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. This new project from Sayonara Wild Hearts developer Simogo has been featured in several live-stream showcases since 2022, with trailers teasing its eerie tone and puzzling world. While we’ve had some details for a while, the burning question remains: What exactly is it?
After a long wait, the mysterious game has been unveiled by Annapurna Interactive, granting unrestricted access to a full PC build. While still exploring the puzzle-filled haunted hotel, enough of the game has been played to confidently say that Lorelei and the Laser Eyes might just be one of 2024’s boldest and best games.
Puzzle-box horror
Although Lorelei and the Laser Eyes may seem unfamiliar at first glance due to its striking black-and-white art style, it’s relatively easy to explain. It’s essentially a 1990s horror game with a focus on puzzles instead of combat. The journey begins in a creepy hotel where the player assists an eccentric Italian auteur in filming an avant-garde masterpiece. The story unfolds through scattered writings and cutscenes, but the majority of the gameplay involves solving puzzles within the hotel.
