The Rivian of today feels like the Tesla of six or seven years ago. Rivian is bringing fresh ideas to the table with excellent vehicles that deliver great software and cool new designs.
Rivian has actually been around for 15 years now. The company launched the R1T truck and the R1S SUV four or five years ago. For the 2025 variant, Rivian has given the R1S a second-generation refresh.
I recently spent a week testing out the 2nd-gen Dual Max Rivian R1S with the optional Performance Upgrade. The new R1S takes what was loved about the original and builds on it in meaningful ways.
Design and Interior
The exterior design of the Rivian R1S stays largely the same for the 2nd-gen model, which is a good thing. The design looks and feels premium while maintaining a fun and modern look.
There are some minor changes to the exterior design, including the addition of a new LED light bar at the front, which can show status information like battery level when plugged in and charging.
The interior features a new dynamic glass roof, customizable interior lighting, and additional storage options, making it feel premium and spacious.

Driver assist features like backup cameras, autonomous driving, and parking assistance add to the overall convenience and safety of the R1S.
Driving Experience
The Performance Upgrade in the R1S Dual Max model delivers zippy acceleration and responsive steering, making it a joy to drive despite its size and weight.
The regenerative braking system is customizable and efficient, helping to improve the overall driving experience and range of the vehicle.
The R1S features new air springs and revised suspension tuning, enhancing steering responsiveness and reducing cabin movement under acceleration and braking.
Range and Charging
The R1S offers excellent range options, with models ranging from 270 to 410 miles depending on the battery size. Charging at home is convenient for day-to-day driving, but issues with public fast charging infrastructure may arise.
Upcoming models will feature the Tesla NACS charging connector, improving charging capabilities for owners. Overall, the R1S provides a great range and driving experience for electric SUV enthusiasts.
